You told me two things that proved true before my trip to St Pete. She fixed my scarf each time before going out and I had to concede on the shots of vodka.
The first time she fixed my scarf I chuckled and explained to her why. This got a big smile from her too. Each time we sat down for a few shots of vodka she explained this wasn't what she normally did. It was a special occasion. There must be quite a few special occasions in Russia. :lol:

It is interesting that most posts her are ignoring two things...
1) What the women say.
2) What the numbers say.
Everything else is men taking a single data point and arguing, because it suits their needs, that the fact that they married, or are pursuing a significantly younger woman is normal.
It is not, not now, not never.
There are reasons why it happens and it has much more to do with the active choices made by the small number of women who are interested in marrying a foreign guy and the motivations of the men who pursue them. Women in marriage agencies are not by any stretch of the imagination a representative sample of Russian womanhood!
I am very far from confident in the idea that older women change their minds about marrying much older men, they do not do so in the rest of the world, why should a Russian woman change her mind after five or six years of marriage followed by a divorce? They do so because it is a compromise they must make, just like their younger unmarried sisters seeking a foreign guy. If the majority of foreign men seek women who are ten years or more younger then that means that the effect remains all the way up the age range, visible as a shortage of available Americans willing to consider a woman only a couple of years younger than himself. We men can not marry more than one woman (legally, at least!)

Your question as to what is killing Russian men is interesting. Commonly, the surplus in deaths is attributed to drink, smoking and general ill health, but when studies have been conducted upon the population it is discovered that whilst these are indeed contributory, they are not on their own enough to explain the magnitude or pattern of the die off. Work is ongoing to try to pin down the other contributors.
In fact the death rate has now returned to a similar level to that in the late 1980's ( a good thing!).
What is very interesting is that the men that Russian women might be thought to be most interested in are entirely unaffected by the decline in longevity!

Which raises further questions as to motivations of the women in agencies given that there is hardly a shortage of the brightest and best men in Russia, but a relative shortage of long lived, thick, older, uneducated men...
I don't suggest that women, in general, only go out with older guys for economic considerations. I know it is not always true. But I suggest that a Russian woman, in a marriage agency, would only choose to marry an older guy because he was the only choice that offered her what she wanted in economic terms. If she could find a guy of her age cohort, Russian or American that offered an acceptable package, she would almost certainly choose the Russian and then after that the foreign guy. The 'package' is significant here. It comprises economics, appearance, age, lifestyle, career, willingness to leave her family etc etc and all in individually variable proportions. It is why a girl might reject a man who was more wealthy than another, because the second guy was just a nicer person...
But, the reason she is with the agency is to improve her lifestyle (economics). She can be poor and with a poor lifestyle in her home town!
